Learn Piano Keyboard

The first glance at a piano keyboard can cause a little bit of stress. Especially if it is a full-size keyboard with 88 keys. If you are practicing with Yousician, you do not have to worry about that. Our app will guide you with positioning your fingers on the keyboard. We use color codes, which makes it much easier to find the right notes for your songs and nail the practice sessions. Yousician will also give you lessons about finding individual notes on your keyboard.

You will notice that the size of the keyboard does not really matter. The pattern of different notes will always be the same. Once you are starting to memorize the positions of the notes, playing the piano will become much easier. You will then be able to focus more on the music itself, rather than constantly checking if you are hitting the right notes. Yousician’s workouts, lessons, and simple app layout will gradually get you there.

Learn Piano Notes

Reading and understanding notes is so easy, right? Or maybe not so much. When you start learning piano with Yousician, you will learn which letters are which notes. We will also give you tips on how you can find different notes from the keyboard easier. Of course, you do not have to learn everything immediately. When you are practicing songs, our app will show you the notes that you are playing. We believe learning the notes this way is more motivating than spending your nights reading about music theory.

One central thing you will learn right in the beginning is that notes get lower towards left, and higher towards right on the keyboard. The distance between those notes is measured as half and whole steps. A half step is the smallest possible distance between two notes. On a piano keyboard, a half note is the closest key to your current note, which very often means moving from a white key to a black key. With a whole step, you are skipping one note between two keys.

Another useful feature with Yousician is that the notes are placed on the staff like regular notes. This means that while you are playing, you are eventually learning to read notes. When you feel confident about it, you can change the colored symbols to look like regular ones. You will also get piano lessons about individual notes and where they are positioned on the staff.

Learn Piano Chords

Once you have started to get the hang of individual notes, you can start using them to build chords, which are three or more notes played at the same time. Yousician gives you lessons about the most popular chords, guiding you to place your fingers correctly and making use of the new information in songs and exercises immediately. You will also gain tips on how to easily change between certain chords, like A minor and C major.

It is surprisingly easy to start applying those chords to songs, as quite many popular songs have relatively simple chord progressions. If you look at the chorus from Hurt by Johnny Cash, you can see that you need only four chords to get through it. Like with individual notes earlier, Yousician will show you which keys to press to get through the song.

How To Play The Piano With Both Hands

Every piano player finds playing with both of your hands challenging in the beginning, so you are not alone. It will take time and practice to develop the coordination between your hands, but Yousician gives you a smooth learning curve to master it. Take your time to practice and have fun while doing it. Remember that in practice mode, you can adjust the tempo and even choose if you want to play with one or both hands, so you can gradually develop your speed with your favorite songs.

When you are playing the piano, you will notice that there are two different staff lines. The upper one is called the treble staff, which is usually played with the right hand. The staff below is called the bass staff, which is therefore meant to be played with the left hand. This makes sense with how we mentioned lower notes being left on your keyboard and higher notes on the right side.
