Piano is one of those musical instruments that you can actually practice and learn effectively on a smartphone. While there are several amazing apps for other instruments like guitar, drums, and violin, pressing piano keys I found was much easier on my droid’s screen. I suspect it is something to do with the flat surface.
Learning to play a piano on your Android means you can practice and learn anywhere and anytime. Practice, after all, is what makes you perfect.
Let’s take a look at some of the best Android apps to learn piano and piano notes. We will explore apps for both beginners, like me, and pros like you guys.
1. Simply Piano
Simply Piano is a beautifully designed piano app that was developed with beginners, children, and pros in mind. When you fire up the app for the first time, it will ask you to choose one of the three options.
I selected Scratch (beginner) because this is a new hobby for me. Simply Piano will ask whether you have access to a piano or not. If yes, it will show where to place your fingers with guided on-screen text. If not, you will see an interactive piano on your screen that you can play around with.
There are a number of courses and popular songs available in the app for you to practice. New lessons with step-by-step guides will unlock as you progress. Note that the app operates on a freemium model but there are no ads.
While there are apps that will teach you how to play a piano, you also need an app that will help you learn piano notes. This is why MuseScore made the list. An app dedicated to music sheets.
You can not only view music notes on sheets but can also listen to it before practicing on your own. The app will allow you to play particular parts or change the tempo (changeable in real time) of the sheet as you desire.
MuseScore is a free to use app with no ads whatsoever. The database is searchable and there is a pro version that you can buy for added functionalities like cloud storage, using your own scores, download app scores locally, and metronome compatibility.

Yousician is a powerful app that will not only teach you how to play a piano but also other instruments like guitar, bass, and Ukulele. Coming back to the piano, Yousician begins with the basics like hand position, posture, and finger movements. You will then learn the musical alphabets and continue to the pro level.
When you play the notes on your piano (physical one), the app will automatically recognize it and move forward as you go along. Real-time feedback when you are playing. To do this, you will have to calibrate the app when you launch it for the first time.
There are hundreds of instructional videos and exercises to help you learn piano and piano notes. Yousician costs $9.99/month and offers a 7-day trial version. One of the best piano learning apps in the Play Store.
4. Piano – Play & Learn
Most of us want to play our favorite songs on day one not realizing how far and difficult that is going to be. Piano by Yokee will help you find your favorite songs and play it when the teacher is not looking!
It comes with notes and chords for hundreds of songs. To make things more interesting, there are games, daily challenges, and difficulty levels to cross.
The app is easy to use and comes with ads and in-app purchases. There is a subscription model in place that will give you access to more games, songs, and challenges everyday.

5. Perfect Ear
If you are really looking for an Android app to learn piano and piano notes, you need to install Perfect Ear. Why? Because in order to play meaningful and soulful music, you must develop an ear for music first.
You need to learn the art of recognizing chords and melodies without looking at the music sheet. Equally important is an ear for scales and intervals when you are playing a piano. Perfect Ear will begin with theory sessions and then move on to the practicals.
The app comes with a lot of drills that you can practice in your free time but for a fee. Perfect Ear is free to download but comes with in-app purchases to unlock additional materials.
6. Perfect Piano
Perfect Piano is not just an Android app to learn how to play a piano, it’s an entire social media (called Piano Circle) app dedicated to piano players. There are hundreds and thousands of users submitting their work every week. It works like Twitter where you can follow, update and post audios/videos.
The app comes preloaded with some popular songs and lullabies. Then there is an online library where you can search for popular tunes. If you have MIDI files on your local hard drive, you can add them to the app easily. There is also support for full USB MIDI keyboard.
The app is free to download and comes with in-app purchases but no ads. A definite value addition for any piano learner.
Don’t Hear It, Feel It!
